যে বিশেষ্য একই জাতীয় কোন বস্তুর একটি প্রাণী ইত্যাদির কোন একটি নির্দিষ্ট কে না বুঝিয়ে তাদের যে কোন একটিকে বুঝায় তাকে common noun (জাতিবাচক বিশেষ্য) বলে। উদাহরণ: boy,dog, country, city ,village,trees,etc. 1. common noun কে class noun ও বলা হয়। 2. একবচন ও বহুবচন ব্যবহার হয়। 3. common noun এর আগে এক বচনে সর্বদা articles এর ব্যবহার হয়। ✓একই জাতীয় ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুর বর্ণনামূলক তুলনা বুঝানোর সময় proper nounটি অনেক সময় common noun রূপে ব্যবহার করা হয়। ✓একই নাম ও পদবী যুক্ত মানুষকে বোঝালে proper noun টি common noun রূপে ব্যবহার করা হয়। যেমন: The Mukherjees no longer live there.
