    Speed & Distance

Two trains of equal length are running on parallel lines in same direction at the rate of 46 km/h and 36 km/h. The faster train passes the slower train in 36 seconds. The length of the each train is:

    ক)
    500 meters
    খ)
    74 meters
    গ)
    38 meters
    ঘ)
    40 meters
    ঙ)
    None of these

    Explanation

Hint: When two long objects cross each other, ⇒ The distance travelled by them = sum of the lengths of both objects Let length of the each train is ‘l’ metres. ⇒ Relative speed of the faster train with respect to slower train = (46-36)= 10 km/h  =(10×5/18) m/s ⇒ Total distance travelled by them = ‘l + l’ = ‘2l’ meters, Now, ⇒ Distance=speed × time, Or, 2l = 10 × (5/18) × 36 = 100, Or, l = 50 meters.
