Two trains are travelling in the same direction at 50 km/h and 30 km/h respectively. The faster train crosses a man sitting in the slower train in 18 seconds. Find the length of the faster train.

    Explanation

Relative speed of the faster train with respect to slower train = (50-30) km/h = 20 km/h = 20 × 5/18 m/s =50/9 m/s, Distance travelled by the faster train in crossing the man = length of the faster train (let X), (Note): When a train passes a stationary man/object, the distance travelled by the train would be equal to the length of the train. Now, ∵ Distance = speed × time ⇒  X = (50/9) × 18 = 100 meters.
